Once you have made sure that your web site has been updated (see previous post) and is ready to be indexed by the search engines then you can move on to tasks outside of your own web site to increase search engine traffic.
The first task would be to submit your web site URL to the search engines. This can be done using one of the many free site submission tools available. There are pieces of software you can use to help with this task but if money is tight than there is no problem submitting them for free yourself. The search engines may take a while to actually list your site so be patient.
While you are waiting for the search engines to list your site, you can move on to other tasks to help increase traffic. You need to create backlinks to your site which means having other web sites link to your site. If these links are from web sites which have related content to your own site, then the links will carry more weight with the search engines and you will therefore rank higher.
Another area where you can create backlinks is by visiting forums which specialise in the subject connected with your product or service. Post answers to questions from other forum members and prove that you are knowledgeable about your subject. Make sure that you edit your forum signature to include details of your web site so people know where to find your site every time you make a post.
Social networking is a development which allows you to interact with many people who have the same interests and allows you to spread the word about you being knowledgeable about the subject. Again, make sure that you get the word about about your web site address so that people can easily find you.
If you enjoy writing then article marketing may be the best way for you to market your site. There are many sites which you can now submit your articles to which will show people that you are an expert on a particular subject and they will be encouraged to visit your site when they know you will offer them the answer to their problems.
One way to increase your web site traffic (although it is not free) is by using PPC or pay per click marketing. Search engines offer you the chance to pay for advertising on their site. Each time someone searches for a term which you have bid on, your web site address will be shown, and if the visitor clicks on that link then you will pay for that visitor. This is a great way to obtain targeted visitors to your site although you do have to be careful as it can end up costing you quite a lot of money if you are not careful.

Increase website traffic and rank in Google
If you want to increase traffic to your web site, a good place to start is by increasing free traffic from people using search engines such as Google.
You have to first decide which are the best words or phrases which people will search for which are related to your web site. Make a list of all the words and phrases which you think people will be searching for to find your service or product and then research these using free online tools. Google offers some free tools to research and you can find it by searching for 'Google keyword tool'. This tool will show you how many searches are being made each month for particular words and terms.
It is best if you find a word or term which is being searched for regularly but which does not have a great deal of competition as this means you will be able to rank higher in a shorter time. Once you have settled on a few good terms which you want to rank highly for, then it is time to start making changes to your site to achieve this.
Start by making sure the title tags of your web site contain one of the keywords or phrases which you want to target. Try to use a different keyword for each different page of your website so that you can better target the traffic you want for that page. Along with the title tag, you should also make sure the description and content tags contain your keywords as this is another place where the search engines will take their cue. Much of the amendments you have made so far will not be noticed by the user, but they will help with search engine ranking.
The next stage is to move onto the section which your site visitors will see. Use the headline1 and headline2 tags when writing your web site copy as search engines will take note that you are telling them that whatever is placed in the headline tags is important for your visitors. Remember to also try and include your keywords within your headlines.
Throughout the rest of the copy, try and sprinkle a few of your keywords in the copy but try not to make it too obvious that you are forcing keywords into the copy. Try and keep the text in a very readable format for the visitors.
Something else to keep in mind is making sure that your images are properly named so that they too will be indexed by the search engines.
